How to Be Brave

In just the past hundred years members of my family have been: exceedingly wealthy, destitute refugees dying of hunger, hacked apart by sword wielding terrorists, and tossed into prison during the Cultural Revolution.
But they had courage.
My paternal grandfather brought a lawsuit on behalf of women and children interred in a concentration camp. My father lay down on the railroad tracks in front on an oncoming military troop train. My mother fled Afghanistan in a taxi, chased by men shooting at her. She went on to organize labor unions in Harlem in the early Fifties.
I am descended from those who survived
I am a survivor.
We all are.
